“I had the most fantastic time in Nanyuki. On a personal level, the experience has reinforced my desire to pursue a career in global health and has encouraged me to think more deeply about what I want my future to look like.”

“My time working with the team in the Nanyuki Emergency Department was a wonderful experience. I learnt a lot from working with the Nanyuki team.”

“I often had ‘pinch me’ moments whilst away. I couldn’t believe how fortunate I was to have the opportunity to travel and learn, and to work on a project I really felt passionate about .”

“To see our ideas and projects snowball and take a life of their own without us was immensely satisfying. It was an incredible experience”

“Working in Africa has been a career long ambition and this global health fellowship is a big reason for why I wanted to come to Bristol-specifically BRI ED. The most meaningful projects in my portfolio, and certainly the ones I’m proudest of, took place in Nanyuki. I was surprised how quickly I became invested in the work and people there.”

“Our deployment to Nanyuki was an incredible experience. It was great to be able to support the department to continue with long-term projects to strengthen ED systems such as regular recording of observations, identification of unwell patients and trauma care. I learnt so much from working in a lower-resource setting, without the ready access to investigations I am used to in the UK, and seeing the impact this has on decision-making.”

“The experience was exceptional in helping develop further my interest in global health, to learn about a different place and culture, to work in challenging conditions and be able to deal with the physical and psychological toll that has on the local team. It is the best job I have ever done and recommend it to whoever would be keen to expand their horizons beyond the NHS.”

“This fellowship has been life changing for me. I was in a point in my career where I was hesitating if nursing was for me. Despite knowing that I like emergency medicine and the quick pace of it, the stress, rush and demands of the current climate was making me lose the passion for the job I do. This new role created a new path I did not know it was possible and I would like to explore more in the future. I have learnt a whole new set of skills that I couldn’t have done in any other way, and I have improved professionally and personally.”

“I regained the love for nursing and I want to pass that passion to others. I have become more ambitious and I have the motivation to make nursing better.”

“This was an amazing experience which I feel has helped to improve my teaching skills and communication skills.”

“When you work in a hospital – and healthcare system- with scant resources, even the smallest action, idea or shared knowledge, can have an immediate and tangible impact on patient outcome. For me, personally, this realisation made my experience in Nanyuki perhaps the most valuable in my career to date.”

“This trip not only made me re-evaluate my job and reinvigorate my love to it, but also gave me the opportunity to discover another field I thoroughly enjoyed in Nanyuki: teaching. ”
